OASIS
Project: Oasis of the Seas - Royal Caribbean International
Scope: Ship Wide Signage & Wayfinding Design
Design Firm: TGA Design

Oasis of the Seas launched on its maiden voyage in December 2009. At the time it was the world's largest cruise ship, unique not only in size, but in function as well. It was the end of a two year journey for me of design exploration, troubleshooting, coordination, world travel, conference calls, thousands of emails, executive presentations, tight deadlines and last minute design changes. The final outcome was well worth the trip.

The design stage involved hundreds of drawings, sketches, scaled paper models and multiple trips to Turku, Finland to visit the shipyard. A 3,000 page document was created to house approximately 40,000 individual signs, locations, messages and production/installation drawings used to execute the project.

Due to size of the ship, an entirely new system of wayfinding had to be developed that RCI hadn’t used before that includes touch screen navigation and the use of a color quadrant system that makes use of signage and art.

The ship is home to five very distinct areas, which have been designated as neighborhoods. We developed logos for these areas that appear on both the static and interactive wayfinding systems.
